Award Conditions

How can I apply for a scholarship?

A scholarship application is submitted online through the platform Portal de Serviços do Camões, I.P., available here.

Where can I see the results of the application?

Final results are entered in a list drawn up by the jury and are published on Portal do Camões, I.P. within thirty working days as from the deadline for submission of applications. You may also check the status of your application on Portal de Serviços do Camões, I.P. in your personal area.

Can I change data in my application after submission?

You must only submit your application after verifying and validating all entered data and after submitting all documents required.
By submitting your application you are confirming that you have verified and validated all data and that the appropriate services can begin analysing your application.
After submitting the application, you may only change some of your personal data: address, telephone numbers, and email address.
Any other change must be requested through Portal de Serviços do Camões, I.P. by using the «Messages» tab:

How do I know if my application has been submitted?

When the application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email and there will be a message of success on the webpage.

Can I apply for another scholarship programme when applying for a Camões, I.P. scholarship programme?

Yes. However, if you are accepted as a recipient of one of our scholarships, you will not be able to receive a similar scholarship from another Portuguese institution.

Documents Required

What documents do I need to apply for a scholarship?

To apply for a scholarship, you need to complete the application form, available on Portal de Serviços do Camões, I.P., and submit the following documents:

  • Statement of academic record;
  • Curriculum Vitae;
  • Portuguese language training certificate (Optional);
  • Motivation letter explaining the reasons for submitting the application and to what extent you consider that receiving the scholarship will contribute for your future professional career and the spreading of Portuguese language and culture (100 to 400 words);
  • Two recommendation letters from two people of recognised reputation, preferably from university professors working in the field of Portuguese.

Applicants for the Fernão Mendes Pinto, Research, Pessoa and Vieira scholarship programmes also have to present a detailed work plan written in Portuguese with clear objectives and implementation deadlines (model available on Portal de Serviços, when submitting the application).
During the assessment of applications, documents not written in Portuguese or English will not be considered. Original documents not written in Portuguese or in English must be submitted with the corresponding translation certified by an authority recognised for the purpose.

I have been asked to submit a document that I cannot get within the deadline. What can I do?

In substitution of the requested document, you must submit a statement explaining the reason(s) why you cannot present the document.

In what formats can I send the documents requested for submitting a scholarship application?

The documents to be sent must be scanned and sent in one of the following formats: PDF, JPEG, PNG.
When sending multiple documents for a given purpose (e.g. certificates), you must submit the set in a single compressed file in one of the following formats: ZIP, RAR, PDF with multiple pages.

How can I send documents that may be requested after I have submitted my application?

Documents requested after the submission of the application must be sent through your personal area by message («New Message» tab).

What is NIF?

In Portugal, the term NIF, or taxpayer number, is the Tax Identification Number. In the field NIF you must enter the tax identification number of your country of origin. If this number is not used in your country of origin, enter your personal/citizen identification number.

What is BI/SS?

The Identity Card (shorten to BI) is the single identification number of citizens. It constitutes sufficient proof of the holder’s civil identity before any authority, being it public or private entities. The Social Security identification number (shorten to NISS (here SS)) is the number that identifies the citizen before the Social Security.

Is there a standard recommendation letter?

There is no predefined template to follow. Its content is at the discretion of the author of the letter. However, the following elements should preferably be included in it: a) context in which the author of the letter knows the work and the characteristics of the applicant(s); b) what makes them able to attest to the qualities and limitations of the applicant(s); c) their opinion as an expert on the suitability of the applicant’s profile to the work plan.
Recommendation letters must be written in Portuguese or English. They must be also signed by the author, scanned and attached to the online application form.

Assessment and Decision

Who assesses the scholarship application?

The assessment of applications is made by a jury, composed of three members, and disclosed in the application opening notice..

Pagamentos

How is the scholarship paid?

Payment is made monthly by bank transfer to the account of the scholarship holder until the 10th day of each month for the duration of the scholarship.
