Translation and Linguistic Information Technologies

This course aims to develop competences with the goal of mastering translation methods and practices, using reliable linguistic tools and information management, exploitation and organisation technologies, with particular emphasis on computational technologies.

To develop competences aimed at mastering translation methods and practices by using reliable linguistic tools and information management, exploitation and organisation technologies, with particular emphasis on computer-assisted tools.

Course structure and teaching methods

The course is organised in modules, which include the following topics:

Module 1 - Translation, computer-assisted translation (CAT) and machine translation (MT):

  • Reliability;
  • Harmonisation;
  • Efficiency.

Module 2 - Translation and information:

  • Online dictionaries and encyclopaedias;
  • Bilingual and multilingual online glossaries;
  • Parallel corpora;
  • Terminological databases;
  • Lexical-conceptual networks (general and speciality).

Module 3 - Tools for Computer Assisted Translation (CAT):

  • Machine translation systems;
  • Translation memory systems;
  • Terminology management systems;
  • Localization systems.

Module 4 - Using specific TAC tools: translation memories:

  • General presentation of a tool;
  • Basic functionalities;
  • Creating and using translation memories.

Module 5 - Use of specific TAC tools: terminology management:

  • Presentation of a terminology management system;
  • Basic functionalities;
  • Creation and use of glossaries.

Module 6 - Using specific TAC tools: advanced functionalities:

  • Translation and translation reuse;
  • Advanced functionalities.

Course duration

The course has a duration of 168 hours.

Tuition fee

320 €.

Assessment

The assessment of the trainees will be based on:

  • Activities developed during each of the modules;
  • Participation in chats and forums;
  • Assessment tests relating to the knowledge and/or skills acquired in each module (a total of four).

The final diploma will not only contain the attendance certificate but also the grade awarded (A, B, C, D or E) if the final assessment is positive.

There will be an evaluation of the course by the trainees and the trainer. For this, a questionnaire will be designed for the trainer and another for the trainees, which will be filled in at the end of the course.
