What are the objectives of the Camões, I.P. Scholarship Programmes?
The Camões, I.P. Scholarship programmes are to support and promote:
- study and research in the area of Portuguese language and culture;
- scientific and professional training in the area of teaching Portuguese as a second language;
- the training or retraining in the area of translation and conference interpreting.
Who can be awarded scholarships granted by Camões, I.P.?
Scholarships granted under the scholarship Programme to attend Portuguese Language and Culture Summer Courses given at Portuguese universities or at institutions recognized by Camões, I.P. are for foreign and Portuguese students residing abroad who intend to improve their language skills. Candidates must be proposed by their respective teachers of Portuguese under the co-operation protocols signed with Camões, I.P. specifically providing for the number of scholarships to be awarded.
Scholarships granted under the Programme for attending Annual Portuguese Language and Culture Courses given at Portuguese universities or institutions recognized by Camões, I.P. are for Portuguese and foreign students residing abroad who intend to improve their language skills.
Scholarships granted under the Fernão Mendes Pinto Programme are for Portuguese and foreign graduates or final-year students involved in scientific or professional training projects in the area of Portuguese as a foreign language, through Portuguese Language Centres /Camões, I.P., Lectureships from Camões, I.P. at foreign universities and institutions which have agreements with Camões, I.P.
Scholarships granted under the Research Programme are for Portuguese and foreign professors and researchers residing abroad who intend to carry out studies in Portugal specializing in the area of Portuguese language and culture for masters and doctorate degrees at Portuguese universities.
Scholarships granted under the Pessoa Programme are for those responsible for teaching Portuguese and Portuguese Departments at universities or foreign research institutes for training and research projects in the area of Portuguese language and culture.
Scholarships granted under the Programme Vieira are for Portuguese and foreign graduates residing abroad involved in training projects in the area of translation and conference interpreting.
How can I apply for Camões, I.P. Scholarship Programmes?
Application for Camões, I.P. Scholarship Programmes is in two phases:
- 1st stage (Pre-application) - during the pre-application period, candidates should correctly complete the respective forms available online;
- 2nd stage (Application) - candidates selected after this first triage will be requested by e-mail to send the documentation necessary to complete the process for final decision.
Are scholarships available for Portuguese citizens?
Except for specific situations set forth in the Camões, I.P. Scholarship Programme Regulations, this Institute does not grant scholarships to Portuguese citizens.
Under the bilateral co-operation programmes between Portugal and other countries, the awarding of study scholarships is offered by these countries to Portuguese citizens intending to further their studies.
In these terms, as a part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Camões, I.P., whenever requested by foreign bodies and/or governments granting scholarships to Portuguese citizens for learning languages and/or research into various areas of knowledge at higher education institutions of the respective countries, publicizes this information together with the Portuguese universities and on the Camões, I.P. website.
What areas of knowledge are covered by these scholarships for Portuguese citizens?
Depending on the case, the scholarships are directed towards learning and improvement of the language and culture of each country and/or to research into various areas of knowledge (internship, postgraduate, masters, PhD).

What is the deadline for applying for scholarships by Portuguese citizens?
The application deadline varies from country to country. Applicants should contact Camões, I.P., by telephone, e-mail or in person to find out whether the country for which they intend to apply has already started awarding grants.
Another alternative is to regularly consult the scholarships for Portuguese citizens as the information is updated to the extent that we are asked by the various countries.
