The approach to development co-operation should be based on rights, which place human well-being, dignity and equality right at the heart of development efforts.
The advancement and protection of human rights are inseparable from the development process. They have the same objective of improving the well-being of human beings on the basis of equality and dignity for all people, with special consideration given to children, girls and women since they are subject to less protection and greater discrimination. In other words, issues such as gender equality, preventing and combating domestic violence and all other forms of violence against women, girls and infants, as well as global access to sexual and reproductive health care, among other aspects, should be seen as a human rights issue and one that is inseparable from development.
If we want lasting peace, development and prosperity, it is essential to overcome the obstacles that perpetuate human rights violations by combating discrimination, ensuring the rule of law and creating fair and well-rounded institutions.
Governance is an issue that concerns the state's ability to properly serve its citizens. It refers to rules, processes and behaviour in accordance with how the people’s interests are articulated, resources are managed and power is exercised throughout society. Good governance is based on universal principles: an inclusive, participatory, transparent and accountable democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, rule of law and guarantee of equal access to basic social services.
